Void Bastards also takes inspiration from the “Immersive Sim” genre in that the ships you explore feature a lot of interactivity which can play into encounters. Void Bastards is developed by Blue Manchu which is lead by Jonathan Chey, the co-founder of Irrational Games who worked on both of those games. The promotional materials mentions System Shock 2 and Bioshock. These maps can be generated infinitely if you wish to keep exploring in any particular region. The ships you encounter are all randomly generated but do follow a set of “rules” where the engines will be at the back and the cockpit at the front. You lose that character but another prisoner will take their place and retain all the tools and upgrades you’ve got in your escape pod.Įach prisoner has their own traits however so you may lose access to something (like spotting fire on the map) and get something else like colorblindness. You’ll want to keep this location in mind as you have a limited supply of oxygen to explore a ship. Once you have what you need, or once you realise that things are not going your way, you’ll need to work your way back to the entrance of the ship to return to your escape pod. While you explore though you are likely to encounter hazards, mutated crewmembers and security systems. You can spot the computer of the ship from here and visiting that will grant you the location of loot in the level. The ammo is persistent between encounters so you’ll want to alternate your hardware as your stock changes.Įntering the ship will allow you to bring up a map where you will see the rooms and, depending on any traits you have, additional information like hazards.

From that you choose a firearm, an indirect weapon and a device. Once you choose a ship to explore you will be given a list of weapons from your inventory to bring with you. You can also see the kinds of enemies and a general idea of how many there are in the ship.

Hovering over one of those locations will tell you the kinds of materials you can find like fuel, ship issues like a faulty generator and specific loot used in crafting items. The main map screen is where you choose your destination and will provide you with a list of ships and the paths between them. You do this by exploring derelict ships to find the parts and resources (food and fuel) needed to get your escape pod closer to its goal.
